Technology is Your Business (?)
In a conversation with colleagues at a digital retreat this week I was reminded of a pretty startling fact.
The dominant media company right now is Google
The dominant force in the music business is Apple
The dominant force in the book market and ebook market (and hence publishing) is Amazon
These are companies who backed into their industries through a deep understanding of the network economy. They have that in common regardless of what you say about their genius, eccentricity or vision respectively. Of all of them Apple is the only company that is actually a tech company – meaning they actually sell a technology product (software, hardware) alongside the retail music they offer via iTunes.
The punchline for me is that if you are saying that technology isn’t actually your business there is likely a technology company that is realizing that they are actually in your business.
